The Chalet Built for Three Generations at Once - Chalet Himalaya, Méribel

Chalet Himalaya, Méribel

There's a particular kind of holiday that only works in the right chalet - the one where grandparents, parents, teenagers, and toddlers all want something different from the same week, and somehow none of them have to compromise. Chalet Himalaya, sitting above Méribel with the Doron piste at the bottom of its garden, was built for exactly that holiday. Seven en-suite bedrooms across 720 square metres make it one of the larger luxury ski chalets in Méribel, built for a multigenerational ski holiday rather than a crowd. A pool, a cinema room, two separate sitting rooms, a kids' den built apart from the adult suites. What follows is a room-by-room look at why it works.

Arrival

The chalet sits above Méribel rather than in it, high enough for the valley to open out below, close enough that the resort centre is five minutes away. Old wood, local stone, snow settled along the roofline.

The Living Room

A central fireplace sits at the heart of the room, the chimney breast cut from raw timber. Double-height ceilings and a wall of glass keep the valley in view from every angle. Soft white sofas, a deep shag rug underfoot.

Through to the west, the second living space shifts register entirely. Channel-tufted leather sofas, a stone hearth, a wall of bookshelves built floor to ceiling. Quieter, the room for whoever's slipped away from the noise.

The Dining Room

Glass on both sides, a beamed ceiling overhead, a single table set for sixteen with sheepskin draped over every chair. Dinner here is one long table, one conversation, the whole party present at once. The chef sending out course after course from the kitchen next door, the mountains going dark through the windows as the candles take over.

The Bedrooms

Four master suites, two with their own dressing rooms, each with a bath and shower of its own. Two further doubles. A kids' den apart from all of it - four bunks built in like ship's berths, its own bathroom, its own quiet or not-so-quiet end of the chalet entirely. Whoever's tucking the youngest in doesn't have to tiptoe past anyone else's door to do it.

The Skiing

Step out of the garden, join the Doron piste, and the day's already started ski-out access for a group with three generations of ability levels on the same slope. Home again the same way  through the garden or up the path to the front door, boots still on, no transfer, no fuss.

The Wellness Floor

Back from the mountain, the day shifts down a gear. Early risers had already found the gym before breakfast, the rest of the chalet still asleep above them - but it's now, mid-afternoon, that the floor does its real work. The hammam takes the cold out of legs that skied all morning. The pool sits beneath bay windows looking straight onto the mountains; swim a slow lap and watch the snow falling outside.

The hot tub waits for evening. Set into the terrace, open to the slopes, champagne poured before your body has time to adjust to the heat - the cold on bare shoulders, lift lights across the valley switching off one by one.

Before Dinner: The Living Room, Again

This is the loudest hour of the day. The fire's going, boots are off, and someone's found the games. It's rarely a quiet game. It's usually the grandparent insisting they're right, because they invented the version everyone's playing by now anyway. The host keeps the glasses topped up. Through the doorway, the dining room is filling with the smell of dinner, which is the only thing that eventually pulls everyone off the rug.

After Dinner: The Cinema Room

By nine, the noise has gone somewhere else. The cinema room - past the wine cellar, past the pool - is already glowing, eight seats deep, the popcorn machine ready and waiting.

GoldenEye, decided at lunch, when the waiter pointed out the altiport across the valley and its starring role in the film's opening stunt.

The youngest two work through a bowl of popcorn as though they hadn't eaten four courses an hour earlier. Grandparents take the back row and the good blanket. They're both asleep before the credits finish.

Outside, Across the Seasons

The same terrace wrapped in fur throws and steam in January opens up entirely by April. Long lunches outside, the hot tub a daytime habit rather than an evening one, the garden actually lived in rather than admired through glass.

Frequently asked questions

What does a catered stay at Chalet Himalaya actually include?
A catered stay means a dedicated chef and host manage the chalet throughout, from welcome champagne and a lit fire on arrival to a sommelier-paired dinner each evening. The chef reaches out ahead of the stay to understand the group rather than simply confirm a menu, then builds each day's meals around what he learns. Armadillo Chalets staffs Chalet Himalaya to the same standard across every booking.

What wellness facilities does Chalet Himalaya have? The lower floor at Chalet Himalaya is given over entirely to recovery, with an indoor pool, hammam, steam room, gym, massage room, and an outdoor hot tub set into the terrace with slope views. It suits a wide range of ages and energy levels within the same group, from an early gym session to a late-afternoon swim. Armadillo Chalets can arrange in-chalet treatments on request.

Where is Chalet Himalaya located in Méribel?
Chalet Himalaya is located in Méribel, France, in the heart of the 3 Vallées, the largest linked ski area in the world. The chalet sits in an elevated position above Méribel Centre, roughly five minutes away by chauffeur, with the ski lift hub at La Chaudanne around nine minutes away. This position gives uninterrupted valley views not always available from chalets lower in the resort. Armadillo Chalets provides in-resort chauffeur service throughout the stay.
